Wireless and Weatherproof Security Camera
The Blink XT security camera has been out now for 7 months and it’s still running just as good and even a little better since the day I bought it 7 months ago. It’s a no frills, easy to use and setup security camera system.
The Blink XT with a sync module retails for $129.99. The sync module allows for you to connect 10 Blink Security cameras to it and its a necessary piece because it allows for the Blink Security Camera to connect to your wifi network. Also the sync module is the only piece that needs to be powered into a wall adapter because the camera itself runs off two Energizer lithium AA batteries.
The setup is easy, download the Blink Security App (iOS/Android) plug your base station into a power outlet, open the app and run through the setup. You’ll be up and running within minutes. It’s seriously one of the easiest pieces of tech I’ve ever setup.
The Blink app like the setup is easy to use giving you access to easily add additional cameras, view video clips that your camera captured, settings for the cameras, the temperature where the camera is located and so much more. One thing I find annoying is that you don’t have access to view videos , see cameras or do anything Blink related from a web browser only within the mobile app.
This is one of the areas I’d like to see Blink improve because no matter how many Blink cameras you own you only get 720 seconds of cloud storage. That amount of storage equates to 12 hours of video which doesn’t sound like a lot and if you don’t get a lot of video alerts all the time or need to look video from weeks ago then it should be fine. I wish they would give the option to purchase more storage which may happen sooner than later since Amazon purchased Blink a few months back. Regardless you have the ability to download clips to your phone/tablet and save those forever.
The Blink XT camera records clear video clips up to 60 seconds in length in up to 1080P resolution. The default is 720P but all you need to do is go into the settings of the specific camera and change it to “ENHANCED” to capture video in 1080P. Battery life on these cameras is said to be 2 years but more like 2-3 months is what you actually get. The cameras are good in rainy weather, snowy weather and can withstand temperatures of -4°F to 113° F (-20° to 45° C)
- INEXPENSIVE especially compared to Arlo Pro 2
- Easy to Setup
- Easy to use
- Completely wireless: connects via wifi and runs off AA batteries
- Cloud Storage is only 720 seconds with no way to upgrade
- Push Notifications only show after the clip is finished recording they are not instant
- Multiple sync modules are needed if you want to setup scheduling for each camera
- No two-way audio: only allows for you to record the audio. You cannot speak back.
Overall I think the pros outweigh the cons. The Blink XT security camera is inexpensive, easy to use and is extremely reliable. It captures video events very quickly and is pretty clear. I’d definitely recommend this camera system to almost anyone that doesn’t need 24/7 constant recording.
If you’d like to purchase the Blink XT and I’d also recommend picking up some of these Energizer Lithium Batteries as well as they are recommended and work best with Blink XT cameras.
